Congratulations! Joseph Eli G Occeno, PWU JASMS Manila (HUMMS Batch 2019), bagged the First Prize in the 5th Gawad Severino Montano Parangal sa Natatanging Dula 2020 conducted by The PNU Thespian Society with the theme “Imahe: Sampung Taon Mula Ngayon, Ano Na Ang Edukasyon?”
The competition honors the National Artist for Theater (2001) who served as Dean of Instruction of the Philippine Normal College. Dean Montano organized the Arena Theater to bring drama to the masses. He trained and directed the new generations of dramatists including Rolando S. Tinio, Emmanuel Borlaza, Joonee Gamboa, and Behn Cervantes. Occeno’s winning entry entitled “Baluktot,” is a 10-minute play about social commentary on nationalism, activism, and oppression in society, taking various elements seen in today’s zeitgeist to provide a vision of what education might be in the next 10 years.
