PWU Students Bag Top Prizes in ASEAN Essay Writing Competition

Last August 2017, the ASEAN Center in MGIMO University, in cooperation with the ASEAN Moscow Committee, launched an Essay Writing Competition dedicated to the theme “ASEAN at 50: Achievements, Challenges and New Opportunities for Cooperation with Russia”. Open to students and young professionals from Russia and ASEAN member states, the contest was launched to commemorate the 50th anniversary of ASEAN with the intention of raising awareness among the youth on the significant contribution of ASEAN to peace, stability and progress in the region.

Three students from the Philippine Women’s University (PWU) Helena Z Benitez School of International Relations and Diplomacy were granted top awards by an international jury. Norhani Lucman, a third-year major of the Foreign Service degree program, is one of three ASEAN recipients of the Best Essay award, and will be sent on a week-long familiarization trip to Moscow this coming May, sponsored by the ASEAN Center. Alexander Cidro and Inigo Gonzalez, also third year students majoring in Foreign Service, both received special recognition for their entries and were granted incentive prizes. They credit their achievement to the guidance and tutelage of PWU Contemporary International Issues professor Kritzman Caballero. Asked about future plans, all three hope to undertake masteral studies before pursuing careers in foreign service.

Well done, Philwomenians!
