The first CAPA Awards of the Philippine Women’s University was held on March 21, 1980, as part of the school’s first Diamond Jubilee in School Year 1979-1980.  The search for the first awardees started exactly a year before, on June 4, 1979.  Since then, the awards has been held every five years, the second being on June 4, 1986.  The second came in time for the Centennial of Francisca Tirona Benitez, one of PWU’s founders and foremost builder.

The awards, which is open to an alumna or alumnus who has completed an educational level—elementary, secondary, tertiary, graduate—are given to alumni who have contributed to, achieved  for, and participated in national development, individually and collectively as a family or an organization.  This is why the acronym CAPA for Contributing, Achieving, Participating Alumni.

In time, the scope of excellence and service was expanded to the global scale, considering that, of the more than 100,000 alumni of the school, many have excelled in their profession and in humanitarian service in other parts of the world.

The criteria for the screening of nominees and selection of the awardees are as follows:

  • The alumna/alumnus must have contributed to

    • nation building

    • the advancement of the field specified by the award

    • the good image and name of PWU

  • She/he must have been recognized as an achiever and for excellence in a particular field

  • She/he must have actively, or in voluntary capacity, participated in the concern of an institution, community, or the nation, or in the enhancement of a profession or field of service here or abroad.

In the 1980 CAPA Awards, 193 PWU alumni were honored at the PICC Reception Hall.  In 1986, it was held at the Manila Midtown Ramada Hotel with 251 honorees.  This year’s selection came from a field of more than 400.

I. Nomination to CAPA Award

Potential CAPA awardees need to be nominated.  Nomination forms are available at the University Alumni Relations Office (UARO), the Deans’ Offices, or the CAPA Steering Committee Chairman.  The accomplished nomination form, picture and bio-data of the nominee is forwarded to the UARO on a given deadline.  A list of the nominees with documentation is then forwarded by UARO to the Deans and Department Heads who serve as the Screening Committee.

II. Selection and Screening

Nominations are screened and a recommendation is subsequently made by the Dean/Department Head in consultation with the department alumni chapters.  The Deans and Department heads then endorse and make the appropriate recommendation to the CAPA Steering Committee to arrive at a short list.  The short list is next endorsed to the Board of Jurors.
