PWU Faculty Research Grant
Policy and Guidelines

PWU recognizes that a climate of scholarly inquiry and scientific research is important to realizing its primary mission of providing quality tertiary education for global competitiveness. The University therefore encourages its faculty and other staff to undertake quality, relevant research through the award of Faculty Research Grants. These grants are awarded under the following guidelines

  • Eligibility
    • Full-time or part-time faculty and administrators who have at least a Master’s degree are eligible to receive the grant. Faculty members and administrators who do not have a Master’s degree may serve as co-proponents or associate researchers under the responsibility of principal proponents.
  • Amount and Nature of Grant
    • The amount of the grant shall range from a minimum of P10,000 to a maximum of P25,000. It is considered an outright, lump-sum award payable to the recipient to enable her/him to cover the actual costs of completing a proposed research project. Such costs are described in a Project Budget prepared in a prescribed format.
    • Since approval of a proposed research project also signifies acceptability of the project budget, expenditures incurred during implementation are considered pre-approved and no longer subject to liquidation by the grant recipient. Instead, funds are released based on the generation of research project outputs specified in the payment schedule described below.
  • General Conditions and Procedures for the Grant
    • The proposed research may be basic or applied and should fall within the priority areas of the PWU as issued from time to time by the concerned school/institute/college and University administration.
    • The proposed research should be completed within not more than one schoolyear, i.e., the final research report should be written up and submitted within a period not exceeding three trimesters and one summer.
    • The PWU Research Development Office (RDO) shall administer the Faculty Research Grant program in close coordination with the heads of academic units and programs. In this capacity, the RDO shall manage the approval processing of grant applications, monitor implementation of approved research projects, administer the release of funds to grant recipients, and assist recipients in the publication and utilization of completed research.
    • Releases of approved grant funds to recipients, in accordance with the payment schedule described below, shall be subject to evaluation and approval of the specified research outputs by an appropriate Research Panel convened for each research grant project.
    • Application for a research grant shall be made by submitting to the PWU Research Development Office (RDO) an Application for Faculty Research Grant (see Annex 1) which has been approved by the concerned Dean/Head of the academic unit or program. Applications that pass RDO screening are recommended for budget approval by the Vice President for Research and endorsed for final approval by the PWU President.
  • Payment of Grant
    • Approved grant funds shall be released to proponent researchers according to the following payment schedule:
    • First Payment – The proponent shall be paid 50 % of the total value of the grant upon acceptance by the RDO and Research Panel of the following fully written-up sections of the approved research project:
      • The Research Problem – Questions or hypotheses to be addressed by the study, and the significance or importance of the anticipated results of the study.
      • Review of Literature – Description of the most relevant research and other scholarly work that have been undertaken in the area(s) covered by the proposed study, including theoretical models/paradigms or approaches that may be employed.
      • Methodology – Description of the procedures to be followed in obtaining answers to the questions addressed by the study, i.e., conceptual and operational definitions of variables to be studied, research design, data collection techniques and instruments/tools, and how data will be analyzed
    • Second Payment – The proponent shall be paid 30% of the total value of the grant upon acceptance by the RDO and Research Panel of the following fully written-up sections of the approved research project:
      • Findings and Discussion – Presentation of findings based on analysis of the information and data collected by the study, particularly with respect to the problems and/or hypotheses it set out to address.
      • Conclusions and Recommendations – Presentation of conclusions and recommendations that can be made based on the findings of the study, including any limitations to which these may be subject.
    • Third and Final Payment – The proponent shall be paid a third and final payment of the remaining 20% of the grant upon acceptance by the RDO and Research Panel of an edited Final Report of the study which incorporates the sections listed above, i.e.:
      • The Research Problem (Justification, hypotheses, and theoretical framework, supported by the literature reviewed)
      • Methodology (Design, definition of variables, data collection and analysis)
      • Findings and Discussion
      • Conclusions and Recommendations
