Determinants of Multiple Intelligences: Basis for PWU Curriculum Enhancement
Dr. Pricila B. Marzan
ABSTRACT
Many teachers know something about Multiple Intelligences Theory (MI) but it
is not always clear as to how this theory could be used in the classroom in
order to improve both teaching and learning. Teachers are well aware of the
fact that every class consists of students who differ from each other. Each
student comes from a different social, economic and cultural background; each
has a different area of interest, different ways of expressing themselves,
different strengths and weaknesses and his/her own individual intelligence
profile. Obviously, all these factors can effect the student’s learning
process. Teachers are aware of the diversity in the classroom. They know
it is important to know their students well in order to adapt more effective
teaching-learning approaches. However, it is not always clear what kind of
knowledge would be most relevant and in what way this knowledge can be
acquired. If the teacher is aware of the multiple intelligences profile
of the class, strategies can be developed in order to use the students’
intelligence strengths to acquire knowledge more effectively. This will
become possible through the use of curriculum integration. Since there
is lack of MI-based instructional materials being used in the Philippines,
the researcher is motivated to give account on how Multiple Intelligences
Profile and some selected variables can be used as basis for curriculum
enhancement.
