Research & Development
Research Journal - Vol. IX No. 1 (September 2004)

Foreword

I am pleased to note that the research climate at the Philippine Women's University and its Affiliate Schools for Men and Women is beginning to attain a level of significance in relation to my thrusts as University President.

Under a revised University Research policy, new incentives for faculty research were developed. University research procedures were established, together with priority areas of concern, i.e., those research proposals which will support national development thrusts of the government, and those relevant to current concerns of the University.

For the first time, the PWU won the bid for an Asian Development Bank funded research administered by the Council for the Welfare of Children on the topic "Cost-Effectiveness Study of ECD Interventions and Services of the Child Development Worker (CDW), Rural Health Midwife (RHM), Day Care Worker (DCW), Day Care Mom (DCM), and the Early Childhood Enrichment (8 week curriculum) Packages." This nationwide research which is expected to be finished by December 15, 2004 aims to determine priorities of future social welfare services in the field of early childhood development.

Search and Discovery, Compendium of Researches done by the faculty from 1996 - 2002 and a companion Compendium of Thesis and Dissertation Abstracts from 1996 - 2002 were published in 2003. The Compendium of Thesis and Dissertations Abstracts from 2002 - 2004 from the Manila and Quezon City campuses will be published during the 2nd Trimester of this SY 2004 - 2005.

This particular issue of the PWU Research Journal comes in a signature cover newly designed by the PWU Multi-Media Division to highlight the essence of discovery, analysis and use of research materials in an institution of higher learning like the PWU. The use of research findings and conclusions has increasingly become the cornerstone of policy formulation geared towards increasing the global competitiveness of our graduates.

On this our 85th year as an educational institution, I am pleased to note the valiant strides we are taking in the field of research. It is my hope that this would make a difference in our current thrust to actualize the PWU mission and vision with current realities.
