Int’l gab on Women, Water and Waste set
            The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has authorized local executives, including its regional directors to participate in the International Symposium on Women, Water and Waste on June 25, 2008, 10:00 am at Century Park Hotel, Malate, Manila.

            Undersecretary Austere Panadero said the registration fee and traveling expenses of participants can be charged to the five percent GAD budget of the Local Government Units, “subject to Dept. of Budget Management accounting and auditing rules and regulations.”

            Organized by the Philippine Women’s University, it is being held in collaboration with DILG, Dept. of Environment and Natural Resources, Dept. of Tourism, Makati City Government, Manila Water and other key partners from NGOs and GOs.

            Executive Committee Chairperson and PWU President Dr. Amelou B. Reyes said environmentalists from the different global regions will tackle critical issues of freshwater and waste and the leadership roles women play in these sectors.

            Lindiwe Benedicta Hendricks, minister of Water Affairs and Forestry of South Africa will deliver the keynote speech “Women Leadership Role in Water and Water” She will be introduced by HE Ambassador Pieter Vermewlen of the Republic of South Africa to the Philippines.

            Keynote speaker in the afternoon is Dr. Vicky Sharpe, President of Sustainable Development Technology Center of Canada who will talk on “Technological Opportunities and Funding Support.”

            Former Senator Helena Z Benitez, the first woman and Asian President of the Governing Council of the UN Environment Program will deliver the welcome remarks during the dinner welcome at Century Part Hotel.

            Experts from Asia, Africa, North America, and Western Europe, Oceania will share best management practices and strategies, case studies and research agenda on the symposium topic.
