Brief History

The Birth of Nutrition: A Catalyst to PWU's Legacy for Health and Wellness

The Philippine Women’s University is one of the first schools in the country which offered an undergraduate course in Foods and Nutrition. The Department of Nutrition was organized at the Philippine Women's University in the year 1952.

Dr. Soledad Ramos Teodor designed the first curriculum assisted by Misses Maria Caminong, Beatriz Maniquis, Pascuala de Jeus and Drs. Luz Belardo and Angelina Bayan. Dr. Leverton, A Fullbright Exchange Professor in Biochemistry and Nutrition lent a hand. The Department was placed under the Liberal Arts with Dr. Conrado Aquino as Dean followed by Dr. Remedios Noguera.

The PWU has the distinction of being the first university in the Philippines to graduate students with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Nutrition. Ms. Eulalia Lim was the first graduate in 1954.

To maintain this tradition of producing quality graduates in Nutrition and Dietetics who are fully equipped with relevant and appropriate competencies and skills, the PWU school of Nutrition envisions a Center of Excellence in Community and Clinical Nutrition and in the Food Industry.

The Evolution: The Growth and Expansion from a Tiny Seed to a Gigantic Tree

In October 1994, the Department of Nutrition was transferred to the College of Home Economics with Ms. Maria Caminong as Dean and Dr. Angelina Bayan as head of the Department. The curriculum was repeatedly revised to incorporate the latest trends in the rapidly developing filed of nutrition while at the same time to implement the philosophy of education of the PWU, as well as, to meet the requirements of the Bureau of Private Schools, the Dietetic Association of the Philippines and the American Dietetic Association. As such, the PWU graduates qualified for dietetic internship both locally and abroad.

One striking feature of the Foods and Nutrition curriculum was its provision for sufficient Chemistry, Foods and Nutrition background. Miss Ruth Hembekides, FAO Nutrition Supervisor from Guam, who visited the department was impressed by the curriculum where she noted that the inclusion of such courses like Food Processing and Animal Nutrition in the basic Nutrition curriculum was very timely in a developing country like the Philippines.

Over the years, the Department of Nutrition has served the country in educating and training numerous graduates who now occupy responsible positions both here and abroad as nutritionists, dietitians, teachers and researchers.
