Starting out as the elementary school and later training department of the Philippine Women's University, a radical change in early childhood education was initiated by Doreen Barber-Gamboa in 1937. Later to be identified as the JASMS WAY, this early childhood education is anchored on discovery and learning, freedom of spirit, preferences and choices, understanding and appreciating oneself and others, acceptance of diversity and differences, ultimately balanced development and growth. In 1949, a reorganization of the elementary school (on Taft Avenue) took place in response to the clamor of parents that the approach is carried over into the grade school. The growth of the work has been rapid since then. Two schools developed out of this initial effort: the Jose Abad Santos Memorial Schools in Manila and later (1958) in Quezon City, both coeducational from Nursery to Grade VII. While JASMS follows the DECS requirements, the method and sequence is left entirely to the teacher's own creativity by the need and level of learning of their children.
