E-mail: ifad@pwu.edu.ph BRIEF HISTORY Since man made the earliest cave paintings, art has been an essential part of the development of civilization. Thus, our mission is: "to develop artists who will have the ability to translate humanistic values into meaningful art forms." In 1947, the College of Music and Fine Arts, forerunner of the Institute of Fine Arts and Design, was opened and in 1952 it became a co-educational affiliate of the Philippine Women's University. The founding Dean was Professor Felicing Tirona. In 1957, the School of Fine Arts was established under the College of Music and Fine Arts. Araceli Limcaco-Dans was the first Fine Arts Director. Since then the Institute of Fine Arts and Design has developed curricular offerings that remain true to its mission. Programs provide solid foundation in art and design as well as opportunities to assess which area of the visual art is most appropriate to individual abilities. Students in the Institute are motivated to take risks, to innovate, to mature in their individual styles and to take responsibility for both their successes and failures. Perhaps, it is this element of daring that has given the Institute considerable prestige in reaping both national and international awards in arts. HIGHLIGHTS In 1967, the Shell Companies of the Philippines gave a citation to IFAD as one of the best Fine Arts schools in the country. The Atelier Academic Training Program offered the first Adult Workshop Training Program and also a laboratory training workshop. Among the noted personalities in the world of art, the following occupied top positions in the Institute were: Mariano Madarang, Director of the College of Fine Arts; Manuel Rodriguez Sr., the head of the Graphic Arts Department; Ibarra dela Rosa, head of the Painting Department; Julian Cea Napal, also a later Director; Raul Isidro became head; Ludwina L. B. Abes, Associate Dean. After serving as Acting Dean since 1998, Rosario Bitanga-Peralta was officially appointed Dean of IFAD. She is the International First Filipino Woman in Abstract Painting.
